For most potable water applications reverse osmosis is the most effective and economical method to remove 99% of dissolved mineral solids. For commercial and industrial process water applications that require ultra-purification and the removal of the final 1% of dissolved solids, deionization systems are an effective treatment method. There are two primary types of deionization, electro-deionization (EDI) which uses electrodes to remove positive and negative ions from the water supply, and mixed-bed deionization (MBDI) which uses ion-exchange resin to remove trace dissolved solids.
